In this Beacon, you'll discover how to turn any piece of text into a real, natural-sounding voice — no microphone, no recording, no editing skills needed.

You'll use ElevenLabs, one of the most impressive voice AI tools available today. By the end, you'll have listened to your own words spoken back to you in a voice you chose.

ElevenLabs turns written text into spoken audio — and the result sounds remarkably human.

It's used by podcasters, educators, and content creators to produce voiceovers, narrations, and audiobooks. But you don't need any of that background. You can use it just to hear how something sounds, or to create a short clip for a practical or personal use.

The free plan gives you enough credits each month to experiment comfortably.

Text-to-speech is exactly what it sounds like: you type something, and the AI reads it out loud.

But modern text-to-speech is nothing like the robotic voices of the past. ElevenLabs produces voices that pause naturally, shift tone, and even sound emotional — depending on what they're saying.

You choose the voice. You provide the text. ElevenLabs does the rest.

One of the most useful things about ElevenLabs is that it handles multiple languages naturally.

Type in English, French, Spanish, German — or mix them — and the voice will follow along without missing a beat. This makes it useful for:

• Listening to a text in a language you're learning
• Creating a narration for an audience in another country
• Simply hearing how your own writing sounds when read aloud

You'll go through a short setup — answer what feels right, and click Skip whenever you see the option. It takes about a minute.

Once you're in, click Text to Speech in the left sidebar.

Then generate the same text with two or three different voices. Notice how the same words feel completely different depending on who is "speaking" them.

After your first clip plays, listen carefully to the pauses.

The voice doesn't read at a flat, even pace — it breathes, it pauses at commas, it softens slightly at the end of a sentence. It sounds like someone who means what they're saying.
