"Good design was never about the tools. Until now, it kind of was."
In this Beacon, you'll go deeper with Canva AI.
You'll use it to create three very different things: a presentation, an invitation, and a social media graphic.
By the end, you'll see just how much ground one tool can cover โ and how little design experience you actually need.
Most people avoid making presentations because formatting takes forever.
Canva AI removes that bottleneck. You describe what you need, and it builds a full slide deck โ layout, colors, placeholder text โ in seconds.
Here's the exact path:
Go to canva.com โ click Create a design โ choose Presentation โ the editor opens โ click the Design tab on the left panel โ type your topic in the Magic Design prompt box โ hit Generate.
Canva will produce a complete deck you can edit, rearrange, or use almost as-is.
Planning a birthday dinner? A small gathering? A work event?
Canva has hundreds of invitation templates โ and you can customize one in just a few clicks.
Go to Create a design โ type "invitation" in the search bar โ pick a template that feels right.
Once you're in the editor, click on any text to edit it directly. Use the Magic Write button (the small AI icon in the text toolbar) to rewrite the wording in a different tone โ more formal, more playful, shorter, warmer.
Change the name, date, and details โ and your invitation is ready to print or share.
Whether it's an Instagram post, a Facebook banner, or a story โ Canva knows the right size for every platform.
Click Create a design, then choose your platform from the list (Instagram Post, Facebook Cover, and so on). Canva opens a canvas with the exact dimensions already set.
From there, pick a template and customize it, or use the Design tab โ Magic Design to generate a layout from a short prompt โ just like with presentations.
Open Canva here โ ๐ https://canva.com
Click Presentation on the homepage โ the editor opens with a template panel on the left.
At the top of the panel, find the "Describe your ideal design" box. Type this:
Click Generate โ when the design appears in the panel, click on it โ then click "Apply all 5 pages" to load the full presentation.
Then open one slide and change at least one thing โ the title text, a background color, or a photo.
That's all. You just created a presentation from scratch in under five minutes.
Screens and menus may look slightly different โ that's normal. Just explore and you'll find your way. ๐
Look at the slide Canva generated โ specifically the layout.
Notice that it didn't just put text on a blank page. It chose where the title goes, where the body text sits, how much empty space to leave.
That layout decision is exactly what trips most people up in PowerPoint or Google Slides.
The aha: Design isn't just about colors and fonts โ it's about structure. And that's the part AI is now doing for you.
Canva's AI responds well to specific prompts. Instead of "make a presentation about health", try "a 5-slide presentation about drinking more water, aimed at busy adults, calm and minimal design." The extra detail gets you noticeably closer to what you actually want.
One thing worth knowing: free Canva accounts have a limited number of Magic Design uses. Once you hit the limit, Canva will ask you to upgrade. It resets periodically โ so if it happens, just come back later. You can still browse templates and edit designs normally in the meantime.
You've now used Canva AI for three different real-world design tasks: presentations, invitations, and social media graphics.
That covers a huge range of everyday needs โ and none of it required a designer.
Next up โ Beacon 13: We'll use AI to edit and enhance photos โ removing backgrounds, adjusting colors, erasing unwanted objects. No Photoshop required.
No rush. Come back whenever you're ready. 🙂
